Baiyang Foundation Chinese Language Essay Competition

Purpose

To create an opportunity among students to better acquaint themselves with their culture and identity, while exercising their own capabilities in writing. At the same time exhibiting the Baiyang DaDow, including an open mind, a warm heart, and a bright perspective of the future, working towards the unity of people. Finally, to essentially promote a stronger bond between parent and child.





Description

The Essay Competition is divided into three divisions,

(1) Young Writers – ages 16 years old or younger: the essay is limited to 1000 to 2000 words,

(2) College students and High school Juniors and Seniors – age 17 to 22: the essay is limited to 2000 to 3000 words, and

(3) College Graduates and others: the essay is limited to 3000 to 4500 words.


The best three papers from each group will be awarded $300 USD for the first place, $200 USD for the second place, and $100 USD for the third place. Three to five honorable mentions in each group will also be chosen and awarded an accolade.

The paper must be in digital format, either Microsoft word format (.doc) or scanned pdf format and submitted to baiyangedufdn@gmail.com before Oct. 31, 2010.

An independent group of referees have been contracted to select the winners for this Essay Competition.

The topic(s) for this essay competition is based on an OPEN PLATFORM style. Baiyang Foundation will define a subject range and offer a few topic examples. The writer can select his own topic to write. The topic for the two younger groups (Young Writer and College Students) is:

Tiger Mom - There has been a lot of discussion and debate around the education style of Tiger Mom. We would like to hear your view both from children and parent's perspective on this very controversial topic.

We would like to encourage parents to motivate their kids to participate this essay competition as well as to help the kids to work on the essay (researching, communication and promoting writing skills). Parents are encouraged to help their kid(s) with translating the English essay into Chinese. The essay will be judged in Chinese, but the original English work and the Chinese translation must be submitted together. Please pass this message to your friends and invite them to join this essay competition.



Other Important Items

1. The essay should be an original work by the participant and has not been published preceding this contest.

2. The Baiyang Foundation reserves the right to publish the essays in Baiyang Foundation related publications and post these essays on the Baiyang Website (www.baiyangfoundation.org and www.damingshan.org).

3. Each participant should submit a sheet of writer’s information that includes the title of the essay, competition group, name, age, permanent address, and a phone number that the Baiyang Foundation can reach you. Students need to also include their school and grade level and major for those college students/graduates.
